My mom has AD and recently came to live with us (still in the I want to go home phase). Although very forgetful and unable to manage independently at home, she is OK right now when my hubby and I are at work. Our boys have been home with her during the day and when school starts my oldest son will be in and out between college classes. We know that as time goes on it will become necessary to have more supervision for my mom. I have been thinking about adult daycare. My hubby and I then thought, why not start our own adult daycare. There is only one ADC in our county. I'm an RN with 20 years of homecare and geriatric experience. My hubby is a speech therapist with a great deal of geriatric, brain injury and dementia experience. My best friend is an RN and her daughter is an occupational therapist. I could really use some info on where to begin getting started. I'm sure that there are a ton of regulations etc. Where would we look to get the info we need. Thanks so much! Fran

Hi, I found a link on this site that leads to the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) http://www.nadsa.org/. In the upper right hand section of their home page is a link regarding information about starting an Adult Day Care facility. Hope this helps!

Dear maplesyrp:
It is certainly commendable that in addition to caring for a loved one with dementia in your home, that you would have the time, patience and energy to provide care for even more. The link kat6745 provided is an excellent resource. As I read through it a few key items merit highlighting. First, you will want to check out your state's regulations and licensing policies regarding running Adult Day Services. Two sources may be helpful in assisting you in doing this. One, your local Area Agency on Aging (you can find their contact information by going to www.eldercare.gov and entering your zip code. Also, you should contact your local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. If you don't already have their information, you can access it on this (our) website, www.alz.org, again by entering a zip code. If we can be of further help with this or assist with any other care giving-related concerns, don't hesitate to contact us at our 24/7 helpline at 1-800-272-2900. Best of luck!
