My mother in law passed away one year ago. My father in law is mid to late stage Alzheimers. He lives with us. My sister in law prior to my mother in laws passing got her name on all financials incl. checking account. She has been taking money to the point of there only being a little over $2000 left. (we only just found this out) We are the only caregivers and are just at a loss of what our legal rights are. This is where we are at. We need to start looking into FT care for him. I understand it can take 6 months or more to place him.He has been diagnosed by Physician and Neurologist. He is a veteran, what are our options. I love this man dearly, my own father had early onset AD (I was 12 years old) and I do not mind most days..do have those day! But! We are just sickened about my sister in law and need to do something to protect whats left so we can atleast give him a proper burial someday. We are not well off and I am taking a leave to take care of my father in law. He has great insurance besides medicare. His monthly pension and SS combined is approximately $1200.
We receive $800 a month as we sold our home and are renting a home with one level living. It was easier for him. Any help or guidance on where we start would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Caring for a loved one with dementia is not only emotionally taxing but it's also expensive. The last thing you need is to have a family member draining the resources.

My first suggestion is that you call our helpline (1-800-272-3900) for a list of facilities in your area and that you call the Veterans Home and ask about their admissions process. I would also suggest contacting an elder law attorney about your legal and financial concerns. Here is a link to the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys which will help locate an attorney near you.

I have included some fact sheets that I hope will be helpful Medicare and Medicaid Costs for People with Dementia, Money Matters, and Legal Plans. Please contact us again with any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely
