Can caregiver's get disability insurance when they have to quit their jobs to take care of their Parent's with Alzheimer's? My sister told me I should look into it since I take care of Mom and had to quit my job last October. I don't even know where to start. Does anyone know about this? I know it may be different for each state. I live in CA.
Thanks, Felicia

Absolutely not, you are not the one disabled. You have to have a personal disability in order to receive disability funds. You cannot get disability for yourself unless you are unable to work due to a physical or mental disability of your own.
It looks like you're looking for some form of caregivers' assistance, which currently doesn't exist on a uniform, nationwide level. You might want to check with your local Alzheimer's Association to see if they know of any grants or scholarships available for caregivers, though unfortunately, I'd expect them to be few and far between. You can reach your office by calling 800-272-3900. Thanks for posting on our online forum.
My cousin received disability when she had to take care of her young daughter who had a terminal illness. I thought it was State Disability, but maybe it was a grant or something.
