my mom was diagnosed with alzheimers in '04, and since she was only 52 i'm guessing it was early onset. does this mean i am going to get this???? i am reading about it on the net, and it is saying i have a 50/50 chance of having the gene. should i get tested???? won't this effect my health insurance????? i don't know what to do.... i'm in shock right now and i feel devestated/angry/scared. i can't express how i feel right now through simple typing.... i'm a wreck because of this newly discovered information.

Dear Karebear,
I am sorry to hear that you just found out about the genetic component of early onset AD. This must definitely be something that is difficult to find out when your own mom is going through this disease. It is important to keep in mind though that just because you have the gene does not necessarily mean you will have a diagnosis. It is also possible for a person who does not have the gene to be diagnosed with early onset AD. As more research and studies are being done on the disease, we are hopefully getting closer to obtaining a cure for the disease and having knowledge on ways to prevent AD. The good news with increased research is that there is more evidence that healthy lifestyle habits, such as, remaining socially, physically, mentally active, and adopting a brain-healthy diet may help decrease a person’s risk for alzheimer’s disease. The following websites will provide you with helpful information on steps you may take to keep your brain healthy and potentially reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. http://www.alz.org/national/documents/brochure_maintainyourbrain.pdf http://www.alz.org/we_can_help_brain_health_maintain_your_brain.asp In terms of your question regarding genetic testing and health insurance, please refer to the following website for the answer. http://www.alz.org/national/documents/statements_genetictesting.pdf You may also refer to the following website http://www.nsgc.org/ if you would like to meet with a genetic counselor.
