This is my first posting. My husband had some memory problems & some confusion, but this year he began creating memories. Finally last night I called the Alzheimer's hot line, after I was starlted by the subject of the confabulation. It was so out in left field. Didn't get much help from the social worker. (My undergraduate degree is in social work, master's in counseling.) So I got up this a.m. and dug & dug until I finally found my anwer in a scientific article. I had been confounded before, because everthing I had read before had confabulation woven with very severe symptoms. Now I found out that confabulation can occur in early, even pre-clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's. Just wanted to share this in case anyone else is experiencing this & wants to know. I think, even though it may be atypical, the Association should at least mention this as a possible symptom in the early stages. My resourse was Dr. Michael Shanks of Hull University (U.K.?)

Has anyone else noticed confabulation in the early stage? It is very frustrating to have someone tell you something you know for a fact didn't happen.

Hello Gaia,

I understand your frustration. Before my father became very ill, he, too, did the same thing. Not everything will be 'by the book'. My father has a blend of some very late stage symptoms yet in other ways, he has some very early stage symptoms. I remember arguing with him years ago, before I truly realized how ill he was in the very early stages, over whether or not he was at Woodstock in 1969. (If you knew my father, you'd know how insane this would have been, plus logistically in time, it was just impossible.)I didn't handle the argument well at all; I didn't know why he was making things up! But once you accept that he really doesn't mean it, you may find a little peace. Years later, my father lives with me, and believes the shed in my back yard was built by my father. This is impossible, but it seems to give him comfort - so I let him keep this belief. It's harmless - but at the same time, I understand how scary this must seem to you now. Best regards to you.
