Y'all knew I'd probably do that, right?
That's the other problem which needs addressing: The so-called "Twinkie Defense" way of saying "I'm not responsible for my actions, because of the way I was treated as a child", or some such gobbledegook. Our friend Mike Donohue is more qualified to speak to this than I am, but I found nothing to indicate a tie-in of this incident with AD - yet, and if any of you have, please correct me. Folks, this is not necessarily a good thing for us - to have that as a handy-dandy defense, and is all the more reason we need more funding for research. (Again, Mike, Alan, hell, everybody Okay, but what about this 72 year old granny who got tasered in Texas last week? That one did get some attention: http://ydr.inyork.com/ci_12560045 The majority of the people who post to the same local website as me, said "she had it comin'", and scoffed at me for suggesting: 1. Dementia as a possible cause 2. Calling for back-up (yeah that big constable might have taken some ribbing later, but that would have been the prudent ting to do.) 3. Suggesting an "inservice law enforcement course" on dementia: "We don't have time to be "roadside psychiatrists, C_R!" See what I mean? Two separate instances where dementia may have played a role, but the first we'd better "tread lightly" on, and the second we can just dismiss, because "she had it comin'". Hey! Where y'all at with your 2 cent's worth pro and con?
I "crafted" that subject, fine tuned it, honed it down to it's lowest common denomintor, and am pretty proud that it was a departure from my usual "cryin' in my beer spiel", but here I see it got looked at 12 times, but no one has an opinion??? I just came in here, with a cold OJ and some Doritos, and was waitin' on some stimualtin' convo, but all I hear is the crickets chirpin' outside! Just joking (a little), but come on, y'all: at least tell me I'm full of S**T! That was I'll know ya still love me! [gonna put a fine coat of varnish on it now, and buff it out jis a liddle bit! Dear CR,
Since I've had a migraine weekend and now I have a hangover headache I don't have much of an opinion today. But, I did want to say hi and respond to your post! Hi and I Love Ya, Peace and Hope, Lisa check out my blog @ http://lcc-thoughtsfromtherollercoaster.blogspot.com/ |

Oh, so that's the correct spelling for Gobblygook! I've been spelling that wrong my whole life.
Sorry Bill, I am one of the guilty ones that would read this post, go away and need to think of a response, not really knowing how to and then would soon forget about it until I would receive another email reminding me that I had never posted a response. AD? By the way, where do you see how many people have viewed your post? Maybe I didn't pay that much attention to the news about the shooter at the museum, did I miss the part where he is claiming to have AD? Nevermind I will look it up, or you can just tell me, because I may forget again. People use all kinds of reasons and excuses for there bad behavior, including policemen, what's their excuse when using unnecessary force? We can only guess and ask "what were they thinking"? A lot of people these days are committing suicide by cop, where they push the police into shooting and killing them. I've read where the police have had training on how to react if they suspect the person of trying this. They back off and assess the situation before reacting, if posible. Maybe they should have the same training when dealing with persons who may have AD or the elderly. So here's a reply for you, for what it's worth. Sorry Bill, but I hadn't seen this till now.
There was a time in my career when I got the training and started doing competency to stand trial evaluations. Almost everybody is found competent, but that's after a lengthy cooling off time. That's a far cry from being able to evaluate if the accused was legally insane at the time of the crime. In evaluating that, a lot of the truth is to be found in collecting an accurate history of the time leading up to the crime. If it shows intelligent planning for the crime, the offender is generally considered competent. Having a psychiatric illness is not a ticket out of responsibility, either. What frustrates me, lets look at schizophrenia. Those guys generally aren't criminals, unless they have a concurrent problem with stimulants like cocaine and meth. There needs to be a special Hell for thugs who sell meth to people with schizophrenia. Of course there are people who's mental status at the time of the crime means we should regard their situation more carefully. But it's often more complicated than people might suspect. I haven't heard or read anything about the Holocaust Museum shooter having an impairment. Just a bad person, who spent his life building his hate. That people cheered that granny getting tasered is troubling. For many reasons, a significant minority of Americans have let themselves become coarsened, punitive, and without mercy. Until decent people find a powerful, rational way to combat the extremists, we're in for rough times. Like the guy said, when we look into the abyss, the abyss is looking into us. We don't want to become what we hate, to get rid of the hate. Alan |

Dear Bill,
Today is my first day in this News Forum and I saw your postings. Some of the shooter's writings were read over the radio. They were vile, but they sounded coherent. He did not sound like he had dementia. I did not know about the other story. Iris L. I am my own caregiver. |

Hi Bill
Frankly, I really don't care if this person had dementia. The fact of the matter is, there are too many people in this world who are ignorant to what dementia truly is....perhaps if our system would force all humans to study the effects and side effects of dementia, then, we wouldn't have the problem! M Taking each day, one at a time... |

don't know about the museum. found no facts as to why they would point the finger to AD.
as for mom's tazing...i was horrified. the first thing i thot was AD. that is like tazing someone because they have ms or diabetes??? she may just be a mean old lady....tazing a 72 year old woman? is that reasonable force? edit: this is the first i have visited this forum. Love is divine power. |
