Hi.
my mother is 85 y old, suffers from alz and live with me. I treat her with MEMORIT OR ASENTA and tried a few time to give her citalopran because the doctor though it would be good for her dipression. the first time she took the citalopran it took 8 days for her to decide she was 30 y' to take a bus and leave for her birth city 100 km a way from our home. When I came to collect her (she has a tag name+phone num. on her wrist) she didn't recognize me and after 18 hours of agitated behaviour she fell asleep for 40 hours.I stopped the treatment. when she woke up she didn't remmember a thing. yet the doctor wasn't convince it was the medication effect. after 3 month she asked the doctor for a second dose and this time it took her 7 days to get so confused she didn't know her grandchild (who lives with us) and to believe that she had seen a friend that morning who has been dead for 10 y. last week the doctor assured me it can't be the med. that got her so agitated so we started the treatment again and of course after 7 days- the result of confusion', agitation, she knew me but couldn't remember my name, the location of her bedroom in the house etc. has anybody seen or heard of such effect of untidipression drugs? (exuse my spelling- I am a non english speaker) thank you |

Does the extreme confusion go away when she is taken off the citalopran? If yes, I would beware of that med for Your mother. 10mg of Citalopran (celexa) has been wonderful for my 02mother, but everyBODY is different and we react differently. Many people sleep alot the first few weeks as the body adjusts. In your title you have "+aqiz". Is that a typo for alz? or is it another drug? just wanted to make sure since another drug can cause other interactions. |

hi
sorry for the "aqlz" I ment it to be ALZ but was in a hurry. thanks for the advise. I stopped the medication and hope the confusion will go away. the problem is that she gets agressive and non cooperative when she is not taking it. I don't know what to do. |

I want to be careful NOT to play doctor and would worry if you stopped a med just because of my advise.
Finding the right med(s) for an alz patient is a challenge. There's alot of information on the forum about it (go to FIND on purple bar and put in Med). But you do need to work with your doctor (or find a new one--a neurologist who is a specialist in alzheimer's.) General advice: only change one med at a time so that you know what the effects are. There is so much we end up learning on this alz journey.... |

When you stop meds, watch also for effects of "back lash" when the meds wear off. This is late afternoon the next day for night-time doses.
