Has anyone heard of compound 267? There was an articlethat said it reversed memory loss and reduced brain plaque and tangles linked to AD. Now it is being tested in humans. It was developed by Avraham Fisher of the Israel Institute for biological research. The first human trial was conducted by Tolley Pines Therapeutics in Lajolla , Ca.

Hi Dan,
I have read quite a few articles about this subject, and like you I was very excited.
The thing we have to remember is the doctor's created "genetically engineered Alz" in mice brains, which means they created a similar deterioration in the brain...not the real thing. This means they can now experiment with medications to see how effective they might be. This drug has been very positive in those mice and now they want to try it on humans. It may very well react the same way (hopefully)in the human brain with the real Alz, but we have to wait and see. I don't want to discourage your excitement, as I am hopeful also. I really believe we are very near a breakthrough in this disease. Without hope for our loved ones, what would we have?
I continue to pray for a solution for all of us.
Nancy

Hi Dan:

My guess is that there are numerous studies being conducted around the world. My husband is involved in a research study drug test with Elan. They also have had successful mice studies and are now doing the first human studies. The drug (or placebo) my husband is receiving is administered via infusion...it involves antibodies which are hoped to achieve much the same results as you described...I think the drug companies may be in a race to be the first! I also believe they are close to answers;but close to a scientist may be a long way from market. The study my husband is involved in is 2 and a half years, and the first recipients of the drug were last August. We are very hopeful that this may impact the course of the disease. We should all keep reading all the reports as they filter in!

Thanks to you all for your input.
Marge about the Elan study have you noticed any improvement inyour husband? What stage is he. My wife didn't qualifiy for one trial because she was beyond early or mildly impaired.Seems cruel and the whole placebo threory is unfortunate

Hi Dan:

The study my husband is involved in also required that the participants be in early to moderate stage; so that is where he is at. There are 180 people nationwide involved in the study, divided into three groups receiving different doses.(So about 30 in each group are receiving the actual drug.) My husband was selected to be in a study sub-group...27 people who will have a 2 out of 3 chance of getting the drug. He had his first infusion in late Dec and the second in late March. I am somewhat reluctant to say what I think at this point, as Alzheimer's as we know can vary from day to day or week to week, good days and bad. They are not allowed to share with me the "official" results of the MRI's or mini-mental tests he takes. My observations so far: he seems to have much more of his personality back, more interest in doing things, more social. He has started going for walks, couldn't remember where exactly a good friend lives, came home and looked up the address!, remembered to take it with him the next day, and actually went and visited the friend! I was amazed! Yet he still can easily get side-tracked in the middle of something and forget to finish it. I am so afraid wishful thinking will color my viewpoint that I try to take a watch and see approach, but it is hard. What I tell our family is that I am cautiously optimistic. I have asked him if he feels less muddled...sometimes he thinks yes, others he isn't sure. How's that for an answer! We don't know !

Dan
We may have seen the same article; although yours may be more recent.
267 was developed by Abraham Fisher of the Israel Institute for Biological Research.
A team at the University of Cal. Irvine's Department of Neurobiology & Behavior tested it in mice, and reported results in the March 2,2006 NEURON.
Please reference for me if you have seen a more recent post.
I plan to start information gathering by reading results in NEURON.
thanx for any help.
