HTMC,

My mom was put on seroquel to stop her delusions and wandering. She takes 25 mg. right before bed time. She has not had ANY side affects, and the drug has worked just fine.

We have found with my Dad that adding Depakote ER helped additionally with some of the wandering and confusion.

Ed takes 100mg of Seroquel with breakfast and 100mg with his evening meal. I could not keep him at home without the help this has been plus the 1mg of Xanax at bedtime. He has not had any side effects. He still has occasions of being combative but so far I have been able to manage. Good luck! "Me"

I found with my Dad that the Seroquel alone did not help with combativeness. Once we got Depakote ER on board with the other meds he did so much better and felt remorseful about hurting family members. There were even more glimpses of the person he use to be.
This has been a very difficult process for me because my Dad is only 68 but he is soooooo far advanced in his disease process.

I work as nurse in a nsg. home and have for over 20 years. I have seen people react to Seroquel (and other mood altering drugs). These meds are so hard to use because what works with one person may not with another. One of the reactions I have seen is instead of settling someone, they become agitated. I'm not saying that is what may be the cause in your case, just that I have seen it. Agitation may be the only symptom some get as the result of an infection, too.

My 61-year-old husband has been in the hospital for five weeks with complications of early onset Alzheimer's. He has gotten worse in every way since he was admitted. In addition to being combative and agitated, he paces--RUNS--for hours at a time up and down the hall, he can hardly talk, he has to be spoon fed, he has an attendant with him 24 hours per day because his gait is so disturbed and he spends the non-agitated part of his life in a deep, zombie-like sleep. They have him on 800 mg. of Seroquel and 1350 mg. of Lithium, among many other drugs such as Atavin and Vicodion. I have begged them to take him off and see what his baseline is, but they won't. I'm thinking of taking him home with LOTS of daily help to do it myself, but I'm scared. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

My father is 73 and just last week was put on seraquel, his life has changed for the worth since he has been taking this new medication instead of helping, it has created more hulizanations and dilutions. He is also more agitated and thinks that the people he sees on TV are coming to get him. I asked the doctor to discontinue this medication after reading that it could make the situation worth on some patients. He was able to sleep better last night

dkinerk- we have had this exact same experience with my Grandmother. She was in the hospital for 3 weeks before we made them discharge her to us. Fortunately I already had a power of atty for her care and we had to sign off that we wanted her discharged. She went in confused but could walk and talk but got so much worse there because they had her so medicated she was like a zombie and was confined to a wheelchair. I wish we had demanded she be taken home sooner. We kept asking the same things you are - to take her off some of the medications and they said they will overmedicate to get them stabilized and then reduce the dosages. This did not set well with us. We have had similar experiences with the psych drs. at later hospital visits and nursing homes. You have to stay on top of it. My grandmother does not do well with most psych drugs and we have it on her chart now that the family refuses seraquel, depakote, & zyprexa due to what they did to her. I realize some people have had good experience with these drugs but not my grandmother. You have to take control of the care. Good luck with it and get him out of that hospital. You will need lots of help and you might check on transferring him to a nursing home but you will still need to stay on top of his care. Unfortunately, the hospitals are not equipped to handle patients like this and there answer is to medicate them.
