Are you using the lemon/glycerine swabs? If so, instead of using water to moisten them, use the pop that your Father loves. Make sure he is sitting upright and the swab is only moistened.
When my dad was on one, we gave him chewing gum. His ENT thought it was a good ideas that I "thought outside the box" I told him I was too old to know what that means but I had a pack of gum with me and I wanted to give him a piece. Seemed to work.
Good question. I am assuming that he had a feeding tube put in beacause he lost his swallow reflex and this was a way to give him nutrition without causing him to choke or get pneumonia.
While Pat's suggestion is GREAT for someone who can handle secretions, I would start with the moistened swabs. A very little water with the swabs will not cause any harm.
If your Dad is alert enough and can chew and SPIT out the gum you could try gum. I would start slowly with the moistened swabs.
I dont think I will take the chance of dad chocking thats for the help.still looking for swaps with a diff. taste and cream for his mouth if anyone can help thanks
My Fathers problems were not related to swallowing - he had an aspiration issue. I don't blame you for being cautious. Not my intent to walk you down the wrong road...
