My Mom has had Alzheimers about a year. She has lost a lot of weight, she doesn't speak must now, she is in an Alzheimer facility and though they get her up to do exercises, and to eat, the rest of the time all she does is sleep. Is this part of a stage? She seems to be slipping away.
My mother has been living with us for 2 years and was diagnose a year before that. She is on meds for depression but abt 6 months ago also began sleeping a lot. It coincided with a decrease in initiative and ability to think of things to do. She does not interact with anyone but me for the most part and unless I am engaging her to help with dinner, or clean or driving someplace she goes right to bed. She has sever eye problems as well so doing games or hobbies(even if she was able) is not an option. It is certainly difficult to keep her busy at times. My best to you
Cyndee, what sorts of meds is she on? Some of them can cause somnolence of a side effect. Conversely, she may be suffering from depression and/or apathy, and meds to counteract those might help. If she's not on the conventional AD meds, those might help her feel more interested and alert.
What are the staff doing about her weight loss? There are many things that can cause an AD patient to lose weight, and there are things that can be done to counteract most of them. See, e.g.:
