As a last ditch effort, the doctor is prescribing the Exelon patch for my mother's agitation.
She had negative results with Aricept and Namenda years ago. Same thing with antipsychotics. And with antidepressants.
I guess I'm just stunned, but trying to be open-minded. I can't imagine how Exelon would help with her behaviors at this late stage. But then, maybe I'm just not clued in to its benefits. I've read that it's for early and moderate AD and similar to Aricept. Mother fits the stage 6 criteria.
I'm worried because I know my mother would not be able to verbalize any bad effects. It's getting near impossible to figure out what she's saying. And she's very likely to pull it off, handle it, maybe put it in her mouth, and her fingers are generally in her mouth, nostrils and eyes (and other places you can imagine), so I wonder what harm the Exelon might do there.
I noticed another poster asking about the Exelon patch for agitation also, prescribed by his father's neurologist. This is why I'm wondering if there is some validity to it.
Thank you.

My wife started Exolon patch 6weeks ago. she is stage 5. Only very slight skin irritation, no other side affects. She seems to be calmer and happier. She has been on Aricept about 2 years now. Like other meds, just have to try and see what happens. Good luck. Take care of youself.
