The doctor prescribed 'respiridona' to my father because he was agressive, now he is ok, but the doctor continue to prescribe it to him, the drug is killing my father, he can not talk, walk, to do any movement, he stays all day sitting down in a chair, his wife is his takecare and I can not change it, sometimes I feel desperate, I need help to support this. I want another doctor's opinion about the use of this drug in alzheimer disease.

could you be refering to Risperdal? If so you might want to go to the caregivers section and do a find search on risperdal.

My mother first was prescribed namenda and then namenda and aricept and within the past month risperdal was added to the list. I don't know how she would be without this medications, but I do know that after each addition, I noticed changes, most of all with the risperdal. When I took her off the risperdal she became highly aggitated to the point where I took her back to the doctors office. According to the nurse a great number of people with dementia are prescribed this drug. They adjusted the dose and mom is doing much better (and so am I!)
Don;t try to figure the medications out on your own. If you detect strange behavior, change in behavior contact the doctor. They have more knowledge and experience and they understand. God bless you for the care and love you give...Have a merry Christmas Laydebyrd@aol.com |

Oi Edna

My grandmother is with the same sintoms of Edna's father, because she started to take the respiridona.
Before the drug she was agressive and now, after the drug she stopped to talk and move, and we noticed her eyes stoped. We are desisperated.. |

Muy Importante! I saw someone post to you in Spanish but that's about all I know!
Please listen to their advice and have your doctor adjust the dosage. Hopefully that will help. Importante! Rose's Baby famc17 (at) yahoo.com |

My father has had alzheimers for seven years. The last year he started showing sighns off aggresion, Wow. We started taking the risperdal and it has made a big difference. Yes it makes him sluggish but I rather have that then the aggresion. I know that there is no cure for this awful, cruel sickness. The medicine is just making it a little bearable.

I am an RN whose mother has dementia. Her behaviors were dreadful and she lived a life of no quality whatsoever. She was overwhelmed by her delusions.
We tried all non-drug interventions with no success. The Neurologist we took Mother to started her on Risperdal, and it was like a miracle! Mother's delusions completely disappeared and she is SO much more calm. Mother did NOT become sedated, she did not have any side effects, she did not develop any shaking. She has been taking Risperdal for a little over one year now. Without this medication, she would be living in a hell. I think that there is something VERY important to think about. First, it is by far the best thing, to have a Neurologist manage such a drug. Secondly, if your loved one is on OTHER medications, side effects are frequently caused by using multiple drugs together. Third, ALWAYS, when starting an antipsychotic such as Risperdal or Seroquel, start low and go slow with prescribing. My mother's initial doseage was 0.5 mg each night. That did well for several months. Then she began to have an increase in her negative behaviors. The Neurologist increased Mother's dose to 1 mg. Risperdal each night. Thus far, for a year, she has been just fine. Alert, mostly oriented, calm, smiles alot, and appears reasonably content. Not all patients have the same results, but for my mother, I am very grateful that she was able to receive such a blessing. |
