Could someone please help me on this drug..they have asked to put DM on it today. The other drug she mentioned also begins with an R but I can't find it here anywhere. She said 1 would replace Celexa and the other was like Namenda, Aricept. We have tried both of those and the Excelon patch, with not much difference except the patch made her even wiggier and she felt it too. She is SNF now after a severe uti and a stay @ the hosp.

I think one problem here is she wants one of them to increase her appetite, which she has a good appetite you just have to feed her because she won't or can't so do we need a drug for that? Is it magic and picks up her fork for her? So do we need that one?

Right now she is on Lisinopril, Pravastain, & Celexa. So she wants to stop the Celexa. I was reading here about Risperadol and it causes death in some ALZ patients....so if someone here could explain them to me, because I know all the medical ppl will all say it is ok.....I just need to be a little more informed before I let them give her something that could hurt her. I've stopped morphine(@ hospital) halidol(made her very weird) ativan(she is not a problem) so I feel like they just want to drug them to death.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated...
Thanks to all,

Cheril

Hi, Cheril.

Risperidone (Risperdal) is an "atypical antipsychotic", typically prescribed for behavioral problems such as hallucinations, delusions, aggression, hostility and uncooperativeness. It would replace the haldol.

The other drug is "razadyne", which is a cholinesterase inhibitor, like exelon and aricept. BTW, it is available in generic form, called "galantamine", which is much less expensive.

The cholinesterase inhibitors help the brain to function a bit better.

Neither of these drugs (risperdal, razadyne) is an appetite stimulant per se.
