Many thanks to HBO for talking about the subject of Alzheimer's which has been made taboo for a long time.
HBO has always been the forerunner. It is once again. Was the series perfect? No. Did they do a good job? Yes. Did they get the message out about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias? Yes. Thanks again, HBO and everyone who participated and worked so hard. From Lisa who is 55 has Early onset/Young Onset AD and is a caregiver to her Mom with AD. Thanks for being our New Voice! Peace and Hope, Lisa check out my blog @ http://lcc-thoughtsfromtherollercoaster.blogspot.com/ |

Hey Lisa,
I went to one of the previews last month for the HBO: The Alzheimer Project and the creators mention that are actually more tapes of this series....I think that they said 18. They will become available in the near future. Lupe is 95, and I'm 55. She doesn't know that I'm her daughter, but I know that she is my mother. |

I agree, thank you HBO. My only fear is that people aren't going to watch it or don't have HBO.

HBO guys, forgive me for acting like Simon on American Idol!! While I can complain about some of your choices, here's the deal: You've just done more for people with dementia and their caretakers, than anyone has ever done. Thank you, from the depths of my soul, thank you.

Anita, these are already available on the internet. They are "supplementary" videos, shorter (~15-30 minutes each) and much more targeted, usually on scientific advancements and our understanding of the disease. I've watched about half of them so far, very interesting.

Hello Cindy: Welcome to the Online Community. We are pleased to have you here. Can you tell us a little about yourself and if you have a loved one with dementia?
We'd like to get to know you. In the meantime, we are here to support one another and it is a terrific group of people. Hope to see you again, Cindy, Johanna C. Peer Volunteer |

Hey Cindy,
Thanks for joining in. I guess your post quoting what I said means you agree with me. Is that correct? Do you or someone you love have AD? Please, tell us more about yourself and your circumstances. Can I help? Peace and Hope, Lisa check out my blog @ http://lcc-thoughtsfromtherollercoaster.blogspot.com/ |

Thanks HBO!
Hello ALL, My name is Jessica and my mom is 54 years old and has Early onset dementia. I really enjoyes watching the program on HBO and it has heled me understand many things. I'm still interested in seeking a health care provider that specializes in Alzheimer's?? It' been very hard and difficult seeing my mother's condition worsen. It has been close to 2 years since her neurologist diagnosed her. |

Hi Jessica, thanks for joining the community!! I'm a couple weeks short of 54 myself, EOAD. And similarly, just around two years since my old world blew up.
Sorry about your mom. Just love her, don't worry about the future, just love her in the here and now. Don't borrow trouble unless you just have to. Do you get to go with her to doctor visits? There's often not much point to an AD person going alone, depending on how much she accepts her diagnosis. As for finding a specialist, click on the "Alzheimer's Association" thing at the top or bottom of the screen, and navigate to your nearest one. Call them up during business hours, and ask for doctor suggestions. Tell me more about your mom, and how you're coping with her changes, please? Alan |

Hi to All,
I just wanted to say THANKS AGAIN to HBO for bringing Alzheimer's/Dementias to the public!! Thank you. I hope you do more segments asap!! We need ALL the help we can get. Peace and Hope, Lisa check out my blog @ http://lcc-thoughtsfromtherollercoaster.blogspot.com/ |

HBO I want to add my voice to the "Thank You" chorus. People with A/D and their caregivers can use all of the help that they can get in educating the public. You had the courage to start the ball rolling. Your series was not perfect...but...To a starving person imperfectly cooked food can taste like ambrosia.
Wanting a little bit more is a human trait. I'm human. The little bit more that I want is for you and the Alzheimer's Association to consider sending DVDs from the series to some libraries where they would be available on an ongoing basis to people with little funds, no cable, and no computer. My guess is that the public would sign them out and use them as a springboard to further knowledge and students could use them as a source in report writing. skericheri@yahoo.com |

Having them available for check out by local libraries is a great idea. Funds are short for all charitable organizations in this market. Perhaps, you can get together with friends and purchase a set for your local library. Of course, those of us who have watched them understand they are crying out for discussion after watching. lots of viewers have found these boards for discussion; but we need discussion groups though out the country. |

The films can be watched at http://www.hbo.com/alzheimers even if you do not subscribe to HBO. They are also available for purchase on DVD, which would probably be an easier way for a family or small group to watch them together. If you plan to do that, esp. if your LO or younger children are included, you may want to screen them (or have someone else do it for you) to determine whether it would be a positive experience for them. Some of the segments might be a bit rough for a younger person.
Carolina Songbird "Grant that what we sing with our lips, we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts, we may show forth in our lives." |
|||
|
I absolutely agree with Carolina Songbird. However, regardless of age the children must be told the facts. And if Alzheimer's is the word, then use it. And also use a lot for problem behaviors:it's not Grandma; it's the disease.
Middle school aged and older can read Maria Schriver's book and see her segment. But still it's best to do a comparison with what they are and soon will be seeing. All, but the most scientific can skip those segments. [But I'm an old science major and loved those episodes. They gave me so much hope.] All kids and even us ordinary folks should have an opportunity to discuss each program. Best would be to pause as needed to talk about a particular part.Just realizing that many, many people through out the world are confronting what we are confronting can help. |

I forgot I already saw this program...........

Nominated for an Emmy! This is wonderful news!
Is there anything we can do, a la American Idol, to vote for The Alzheimer's Project, or is the decision entirely up to the professionals? Does anybody know? Iris L. I am my own caregiver. |
||||
|
Iris, From what I googled, it looks like just members vote.
