During the campaign Obama and Biden presented a program for Alzheimers that provided for home care by caregivers and asociated tax releif for home care providers. They proposed that the coming number of patients would tax the existing facilties and medicare system so severlyit was necessary. I agree with the idea and the postion. They stated that they would establish IRS deductions for care givers and for home care. Where are these? These were excellent ideas. I understand that in many cases the damage to the family unit can be a consideration if home care is provided however the fact is most can not afford the care in a private facility. The fact is the majority of those I interfaced with over my 10 years with my mother would have been better left in thier home environment. I suggest that Obama an Biden be called to task on their campaign promise now. It takes no huge Healthcare reform bill simply an attachment to current appropriatons bills or healthcare bills moving through congress to add deductability of care, associated travel, allowance for loss of income of one wage earner today at home part or full time to facilitate home care. It is not the total soultion but it is a step in the right direction.

I find it odd that they now want a federal government run healthcare system but while on the campaign trail they supported home care for Alzheimers.

Let's be fair about this. He walked into an ungodly mess. He's been president for 6 months.

The health care mess is far more important in the big picture than IRS credits. Home care cannot be addressed until the health care system is decided on and passed. I am saying that and I am an unpaid family caregiver.

The health care system needs to be squared away and then down the line the issues we deal with every day can be addressed.

I agree with you. I email my state and federal representatives about this issue at least once a month.

It would behove us to look into the plan. They do not want care for people not contributing to society. This is really scarey for me. They don't believe in protecting the vunerable in any way. We need to be very watchful. the more I hear about the plan---the more I think it is the wrong plan.

Just remember, they need to be reelected. Letting them know that people with AD, families of those with AD are aware, concerned and are VOTING is important.

Hi All

What a coincidence! I just wrote to Michelle Obama regarding the health reform. I asked her when it was to "kick" in and when was the "waiting period" to receive medicare going to cease once an individual was diagnosed with AD!

I'll be surprised "if" I get an answer!

I would be very surprised if Obama or his wife replied. The sad thing is, I was working in a state psychiatric hospital, and we got alot of dementia patients. The nursing homes would dump them if they wandered or swatted at anyone. Some of them preferred to be there with us, but it was really too dangerous. They were put in the population with dangerous forensic patients. There isn't any good places for these patients if they have no funds. And with the baby boomers reaching retirement age, we will have many more AD patients and many less nurses and MD's.

No matter what AD robs us of, our soul will remain unblemished.

Also, be aware of the insurance trap that Alzheimer's and other dementias fall into.

Dementias are not considered psychiatric disorders. They fall under medical disorders. Yet, when a doctor wants to hospitalize one of us, he tries to put us in the psychiatric ward. Problem: It's for a medical reason, but the psych unit is only geared to handle psychiatric admissions.

Who even does the pre-evaluation, if you're admitting to the psych ward for non-psychiatric reasons?

The answer is obvious, yet insurance companies resist it: Treat all the ills that befall us the same. No more split systems.
