I have a question, if anyone can help me out...

We're in the process of writing the funeral announcement for Mom, to be published in the Sunday paper. Reading examples on-line, I see that many families have set up memorial donations for a particular organization - such as the American Heart Association. The announcement includes a graphic/logo and/or a web or mail address to send the donations.

We are adamant that a similar setup is created with mom, where the donations go directly to Alzheimer's Association / alz.org. Does anyone have any information on how to do this, or who to contact to get this information?

Thanks!

Chris

First Chris let me say how sorry I am for what you are going through. I had done the same for my mom we asked that in leu of flowers donations to Alzheimers Association be made in her name. The funeral home helped us with all of that, they will have the info. They will ask you what you would want written. God bless you & your family.

Hi Chris,

I am very sorry for your recent loss. It is wonderful that your family wishes to ask for donations to the Association. We thank you!

I wanted to share with you a couple of different options for the announcement and note for donations.

First, you can call our helpline and receive more information about how to set up donations call 800.272.3900. Our helpline staff can help give you more information or transfer you to our donor services staff for further assistance.

If you wish to set up an online tribute forum and then share that link in the announcement please go to http://alz.org/tributes/ You can set up a tribute for your mom, there you can let your family and friends know your wish for donations to go to the Alzheimer's Association. If persons donate, the funds will go directly to the Alzheimer's Association.

If you do not wish to set up a designated Tribute page for your mom, you can still refer people to http://alz.org if they wish to give online.

You could also post in the announcement to send donations to the Alzheimer's Association by phone or mail and then give the address and phone number.

Donate by phone:
1.800.272.3900

Donate by mail:
Send a check to:
Alzheimer's Association
225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17
Chicago, Ill. 60601-7633

I hope this helps, and please do not hesitate to call 800.272.3900 if you have any further questions about this.

Bests,

Jaimie E.

Chris, Glad you posted this. Mom passed in August and we asked in lieu of flowers for donations to go to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association. The funeral home put out preaddressed envelopes to both organizations.

With hindsight, I am able to say do the online format. Both organizations ended up sending us notification letters about each donation as it came in, IMO, a waste of the donated dollars. I'm sure it's to be respectful and keep you notified, as well as give you the list of donors to thank. Online that step will be electronic and the money will go to doing what's needed to ease up our battles with these dreadful diseases!

Thoughts and prayers with you this weekend. Deb

Thank you all for the suggestions!

At the funeral home, it was said that providing a mailing address in her obituary seemed to have the best "success". I was a bit surprised at the expense of running a "paid funeral" notice was (almost $200!) in our local paper, but we made absolutely sure to add, "In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be contributed to the Alzheimer's Association on-line at www.alz.org, or by mail to: Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave, FL-27, Chicago, Ill, 60601-7633."

I was pleasantly surprised that the on-line edition of the obituary actually inserted hyper-links where necessary, as well as providing a "click here to donate" button, linking directly to the donations page here at Alz.org. Although I haven't seen any donations yet, I hope to see at least a few dollars build to the cause.

Of course, why is it, that "certain" people get so irate that *their* name isn't in the obit? <sigh> "and we'd like to thank the neighbor, their dog, fish, cat, parakeet; the family of raccoons that frequently visited in the wee hours, the clerk and bagger at the grocery store, all the people who took her pictures over the years at the drivers license bureau, ....." >.<

Smiler

Chris
