My dad was diagnosed with FTD in January of 2006. He is no longer able to get up/walk on his own. He cannot take care for himself in any way now. He is starting to forget who his kids and grandkids are. He is totally dependent on my mother now for everything. Is there anyone out there that can share with me how their loved one did at this stage? How much longer will he suffer with this horrible disease? What comes next, forgeting how to swallow, breathe??? We are just searching for any info on stages and what is next for our father.

Hi Julie,
You don't say how old your father is... My husband is 63 now, was diag. in 2000-2001, he can't walk or talk, anymore. I have to grind his food, and lift him with a stand assist lift. I think you will get more responses if you post on the "caregiver forum". I wish you well with your journey with your dad, and I hope your mom is able to cope with all that is to come. I have 4 daughters who are very helpful for me, they relieve me for respite when they can, and pick up meds when I need them. They call me everyday to check in.. that is very important to me. I am sure you will be a great help to your mom, too. connecticut |

Julie,My wife was diagnosed in January 2001 with FTD. She can still walk but only with assistance. She needs help with everything else and is incontinent. It sounds like your dad is going through the disease at a more rapid pace. You'll find out that each peson is different in how the disease progresses. I fear the day my wife start having difficulty with swallowing. My only advise is to make the best of each day with you dad and remember your not alone.
please pray with me for a CURE |
