Hi, my name is Marion and I have a girl friend which was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about 5 years ago. Lately she is deteriorating fast. Today, she did not even wanted to see me (I visit her regularly). She no longer wants to leave the house, even for short walks etc. I don't know what to do, how to help, how to entertain or how to engage her.
Can anybody help or has suggestions?

Thank you.

Dear Marion,

I am glad you have found this community although I am very sorry for what has brought you here.
It is very common for persons with Alzheimer’s in the mid to later stages to become less active. In some cases there can be an underlying medical or psychological reason to this sort of behavior. Depending on the level of cognitive impairment, it is also very common for persons with Alzheimer’s to experience depression, which may affect their level of activity. You may want to try to connect with her doctor regarding this change in behavior.

You may find this document called "Activities At Home: Planning the day for a person with dementia" to be a helpful guide to activities to engage your friend. Please copy and paste this link into your internet browser to have access to the document http://www.alz.org/national/documents/brochure_activities.pdf

It is great to hear that she has such an amazing friend to visit her and to be with her during this very difficult journey. If you need any further resources to help provide care for you or your friend, please feel free to call the Alzheimer’s Association 24 hour helpline (800-272-3900) to reach your local chapter or a counselor.

Also, you may find it helpful to post your questions and concerns in the 'Caregivers Forum'. There may be other caregivers who have gone through a similar situation as you and they may be able to offer you some of their own advice or suggestions.

Bests,
