I have read of a man in Israel who has a service dog, but nothing in the States. Does anyone know if there are groups working on this? BTW, SERVICE dog is different from THERAPY dog and while both are great, a therapy dog visits people while a service dog works daily with one person.

If you find out can you let me know too.

Thanks

Many service dog schools will train a dog specifically to suit your needs. What would you like the dog to do?

I have raised for both The Seeing Eye and then for a service dog organization in Florida.

I just saw that article about the dogs trained in Israel--was specifically looking today, following a family discussion last night. Aside from what a dog can do for the patient, it can be a treasure for a caregiver. My grandmother and i have a small mixed breed, 16 years old, who is just naturally very smart and sensitive. I didn't realize until lately (while she stays with my niece during a home move) how much I depend on the dog. If grandmother tries to get up (fall) or is having difficulty while I am out of the room, our dog comes to me. She has three different faces & voices (come, she has fallen!; come, she is getting up!; please come, she needs help with something). Now that she is not with us temporarily, I feel like I have to do everything at warp speed and return to the room grandmother is in. I really rely on Bailey to help 'watch' grandmother so I can do a few little things out of the room, or take out the trash, etc. A dog trained to help the patient but also to 'tell' the caregiver would be wonderful! Any Alz-trained dogs in the U.S.??
