Hello,
My is Phill and my sister Lisa, who lives in Bossier City LA, was diagnosed with early onset of Alzheimer at age 43 or 44. I have been told that she may be one of the youngest people diagnosed with Alzheimer. She is now 48 and because of her young age has run into some very difficult problems obtaining help and services because of her age. To compound her health problems and perpetuating her symptoms, her husband of almost 30 years, isolated her from her family, failed to file proper state and federal paperwork to obtain financial aid and services, failed to provide her with her medication when required, failed to recognize her within their own home, took a girlfriend and had that person stay in their home while my sister was present, used her state and federal financial assistance for his own personal gratification and the list goes on and on. My mother and step father ended up intervening and removing her from that environment and taking legal control of her finances. Prior to my family intervening, my sister was depressed, overweight, lethargic, unhealthy and incapable of much more than very basic communications. Since the move to my mothers house my sister has come out of her depression, has lost weight, is on a regular schedule of medications, laughs, talks and interacts with her sisters and family. Now that she is at my mothers she is receiving the assistance she needed but my mother and step father are running into major roadblocks obtaining assistance and services because of her age. We need help finding facilities that will accept someone at her age and assistance finding legal precedence to challenge organizations who claim they can not assist because of her age. If you can assist me in finding services and facilities that take younger persons diagnosed with Alzheimer, myself and my family would greatly appreciate any and all help. Thanks you |

Hi C and welcome! My name is Tracy amd I was diagnosed with early onset in 2002, I was 38 years old. Statiscally, the youngest ever diagnosed with adult onset is 21. You are right, it is very hard getting assistance for people our age, we don;t belong in the psychiatric places and we are too young for services offered to seniors, kind of sucks! I do know there are many adult day cares that will allow individuals our age to be apart of their program if we meet the criteria. The best thing to do is to start with your Chapter if you haven't already, they are a wealth of information.
