Devotee, I'm interested in what you find out about music therapists, if you'd please post what you learn that would be fantastic.

I'm betting that 99% will be for music with people in Stage 6 and 7. Not so much for early stages, where those of us that can still type would fall in Stage 4 and thereabouts.

I saw this topic and wondered "How did I miss this??" It's an oldie - ttt !! I just finished this book - Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain Here is the amazon review....

Legendary R&B icon Ray Charles claimed that he was "born with music inside me," and neurologist Oliver Sacks believes Ray may have been right. Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain examines the extreme effects of music on the human brain and how lives can be utterly transformed by the simplest of harmonies. With clinical studies covering the tragic (individuals afflicted by an inability to connect with any melody) and triumphant (Alzheimer's patients who find order and comfort through music), Sacks provides an erudite look at the notion that humans are truly a "musical species." --Dave Callanan

Sacks also wrote - "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: And Other Clinical Tales".

Lisa 428 - The "King Crimson" album sits on a shelf in my office. "I talk to the wind.... My words are all carrieds away...." Also Led Zeppelin IV, U2 Joshua Tree, Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, CSN&Y Deja Vu, and a recent gift from my son.... David Cassidy "Cherish". I don't have a turntable, but I find comfort in holding an old favorite album.

Next concerts we will go see - CSN and then U2. Am pondering Santana.... If I ponder, it will happen. Oh, going to go see Bill Engvall at the fair in a few weeks! Mom LOVES his comedy!!

We attempt to get Mom to any concert, musical, play, performance, etc that we can. She will be going to the CSN concert with us (health permitting) but she will sit out U2 Big Grin. In the past few years Mom has gone to the follow concerts. She loved each and everyone of them, AND.... REMEMBERS! Honestly and truly remembers!!

Burt Bacharach was a favorite, but not like Willie Nelson! Cher, Elton & Bette. Keane, Jamie Cullum - Oh how she still talks about that cute little English guy who jumped around on the piano!! Phantom & Lion King on Broadway. Cirque shows. And many, many performances by her Grandson, my son, the music major, now in Grad School.

I will go back and read the many posts before this .... I just got so excited I had to post this now!

with love and peace,
S

I read "Musicophilia," loved it! Envy too, I'm losing a little of my musical abilities this year. What I've noticed is I can't "see" a guitar part in a song. Way back when, I was an active musician, and was pretty good at being a house band kind of guy -- y'know, being able to do something passable if it was a song I'd known at least a little.

It isn't gone completely at all times, but it's getting there.

Among guitarists, I'd seriously consider Carlos Santana as the best there is in terms of musicality. He plays for all of us, while there are elite types who do really complex, less pretty things, to interest themselves and their fanbase. It's all good, just a matter of preferences. I loved performing, and it's my biggest single regret that I didn't pursue it professionally. But as someone wise said, if I had been a professional musician, at this exact moment I'd be wishing I'd done something else with my life.

Oh No! Now I know why I missed this topic. It is under a different Forum then I usually visit. I don't have AD, but I do worry and am so scared at the thought.... I would like to think my memory troubles of the past few years are just the stress of being caregiver to Mom, but I honestly do wonder and worry so much....

But I am under 65 and I love music! Can I still hang around and post?? Big Grin

Alan - I always wished I could play an instrument.... the only things I play are my ipod and CD's!! I feel for you loosing some of your musical abilities.

Santana.... I truly believe he does play music of the Angels. If anyone is unfamiliar with Carlos and his music, please check out his website (you can listen to Santana Radio!!). Also some good clips on youtube. Sampa Pa Ti is my all time favorite. If that's not Angels singing, I don't know what is....

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and Mom (like all good Mom's do, right Lisa?? Cool )would take my older brothers to concerts in Golden Gate Park, I was toted along! I think that is where my love of Santana began. It must have been a Dead concert that I got lost at - I have never been a Deadhead, although I can listen to their music.

Ttom - You were at Woodstock?? SO COOL !!!! I had an almost Woodstock like moment in March 2003. My girls and I were visiting Washington DC. This was during the week the US went to war with Iraq. We went to a Peace Protest on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Peter, Paul and Mary played that cold and rainy night. I asked my girls to "remember this moment forever". Even tho it was only 6 years ago, they are that much older now and are starting to GET what I was talking about.

I've seen the Stones five times. The only Beatle I saw was George Harrison. I still can't remember why I was too busy to pass up the invitation to see Elvis at the Cow Palace in Nov 1976. What was I thinking??

I use music as "the carrot at the end of the string" as the reward to myself for being such a damn fine caregiver for Mom.

Music means so much to us now as Mom has lost her reading and writting abilites. I have many things to share regarding music and Mom. I hope you let me stay and play with you here!

with love and peace
S

serendipity, are you saying that you found this conversation while looking for something else? Why, that's, that's . . . serendipity.

Of course you're welcome to post here, or in any other forum.

As for learning to play an instrument, there are music teachers who specialize in adult learners. I love the strings, even though I learned to play the trumpet a little, and horns are great, I prefer strings. Only orchestral string I own is a violin. Then 3 guitars and a piano. Way back when I owned a bass guitar to play with bands that didn't need a guitarist. My only electric is a Fender Stratocaster, and a cool practice amplifier.

I used to teach guitar, at a music studio back when I lived in Fort Lauderdale. There is such a thing as musical aptitude, but it isn't nearly as important as people think it is. So anyway, I warmly, strongly encourage you to go to music stores, tell them you're just thinking about taking lessons, and ask for help. In fact, a lot of innate talent can lead to taking shortcuts too early, when it's important to get a basic down. A good musical instrument store will have musicians on hand who will be perfect for helping you. In fact, it's a joy to start someone out on the right foot.

Right foot, as in an adult learner usually doesn't want to learn like an eight year old does, and has different goals and timelines. Maybe you want to be a classical guitarist, which will probably take a few more lessons, than if you just wanted the basics so you could strum along to tunes, perhaps while you or someone else sings.

Well, feel inspired to check out different instruments?

LOL.... yes Alan, that is what it's all about.... This journey with Mom.... Serendipity....

I began it thinking one thing, and found it to be something entirely different....

I did take lessons on the organ when I was very young. I can still play "Silent Night". I have always wanted to learn to play the Harmonica. I play it, and can tap out a good beat on hand drums.... but only in my dreams. I did sing with many choirs while in Jr. High, but then HS came along and it wasn't the "cool" thing to do.

I sign off most of my letters and posts with.... love and peace. Taken and changed around as my mood feels. From the U2 song "Love and Peace or Else". Then I read a great book about AD and a daughters journey with her Mother. With Love.... Anything is possible, and made easier when you do it with LOVE.

All we need is Love.... lalalalala

As I said before, I decided to search the internet for Music Therapy and its affect in AD.

I found in the American Music Therapy Association the following: (http://www.musictherapy.org/)

"I regard music therapy as a tool of great power in many neurological disorders -- Parkinson's and Alzheimer's -- because of its unique capacity to organize or reorganize cerebral function when it has been damaged." Oliver Sacks, M.D.:

Read also this website: http://faculty.uccb.ns.ca/gcar...ses/health/music.htm
If you are feeling a bit lazy to read everything, here is the conclusion:
Conclusions
The results of these studies suggest that music therapy may be a creative and effective behavioral intervention in the management of disruptive behaviors displayed by people with Alzheimer's disease. Although AD causes progressive brain deterioration, musical activity can be modified for even the most severely demented patients. Because of the extreme variability among AD patients, their reactions to intervention strategies may be different. As a result, it is important to individualize these approaches according to the patients' personal needs.
Further research is needed in this area in order to understand, in greater detail, how music therapy can work to enhance the lives of people with dementia. However, behavioral interventions, such as music therapy, have "great potential for improving the quality of life and well-being of both family caregivers and patients (Beck, 1998, pp. 45-46)".

Peace and Health to all !

Dear Seren.,

Wow, I am so glad you found this site! Of course you are welcome to hang out and post. Everyone who loves music is welcome!

Sounds like you seen some great performers! I LOVE live music! I have since I saw the Beatles as a child. My parents always loved musical theatre so they took my sister & me to local plays and such and broadway! It was great!

I still love the theatre, live concerts et al. Unfortunately, sometimes I am not able to enjoy it. There are times when I have to wear ear plugs! (I can't believe this has happened to me). There are even times when I can't handle music at all!

But, I never give it up. Like you, I have albums that I can't part with! I am hoping to purchase a stereo with a turntable!! I LOVE listening to old albums (My Dad still has a turntable).

Thanks for caring and sharing!

Peace and Hope,
Lisa

Hi Lisa!

So you mentioned you liked Cat Stevens, did/does his song "Sad Lisa" have special meaning to you?? That was my anthem during my teenage angst years.... Haven't heard it in years.... It would probably fit my darker moods these days if I remember the lyrics correctly.

And how about that cover to Kind Crimson?? Talk about giving someone nightmares! Inside isn't that bad.

I have been privledge to see many many concerts in my lifetime. Some I remember more then others.... ya know what I mean?? Wink

I am looking forward to the CSN concert later this year. I saw one of them, Stills, I believe and Nash showed up, (my husband and I are still arguing to this day about who was headlining and who just showed up) but I fell asleep (passed out??) during part of it.... I am also embarrassed to say I fell asleep at the George Harrison concert, BUT that was when Ravi Shankar was on stage and maybe it was more like going into a deep meditation then actually falling asleep!

When I saw INXS a few years ago, after they did that Rock Star tv show and picked JD Fortune as the new lead singer, I sat, stood, front row right in front of the speakers. I can't believe there was a time I would have loved being that close. HUH? What did you say?? JD jumped down and landed on my husbands foot. And I got to hug Marty Casey (opening act).

And you SAW the Beatles!!!! Another, How Cool Is That?!?! Did you catch Paul McCartney on David Letterman last night??

Our family has a friend who does "Music Therapy". I have been playing his music when Mom has one of her "episodes". I am sure it helps her relax and recover, because I know it sure helps me when I'm stressed. He moved across country just as he was beginning his career in Music Therapy. I should try to reconnect with him and talk to him about how it is going and what he has found to be the case with music and dementia.

love and peace,
S

Dear S,

I missed Paul McCartney on Letterman but I did see on the news that he and his band played on a balcony in NYC yesterday! Wow, it was great to see and here him again. I was always a Paul fan!

I'm jealous you are going to see CSN in the fall. I saw them the last time they were here. I think that was in 2004?? I did see Neil Young at the Jazz Fest this year and he was great too!

It's good to hear that music helps your Mom. It does my Mom some good but not as much as I'd like!

Hang in there. Please, keep in touch!

Peace and Hope,
Lisa

Serendipity, about that concert seat right in front of the speakers, I had that at a reunion concert of Grand Funk Railroad. Me & my buddy got to our seats, and said "Wow, we're right in front of the speakers, yay!" I recovered, but my buddy had to see a doctor about his hearing.

Dear Serendipity,

I realized that I didn't answer you about "Cat Stevens". I did relate to that song in my youth "Sad Lisa" was a lovely song.

I loved Cat Stevens. I was sorry when he changed!

Hey All,

Alan - Grand Funk was just playing here 4 days ago! I wish I could afford to go to ALL the concerts I would like, but choices have to be made.... mortgage, groceries and gas vs. concerts.... sometimes the bills win, sometimes they don't!

Lisa - What you said about Cat Stevens.... "Sorry when he changed".... I have thought for a week on this, because I too felt the same way.... however ....

A little, no a LOT of internet searching has made me change my mind. Or better yet, cleared up a lot of misinformation about the man we knew as Cat Stevens. I find I know more about, and respect the man, now more then ever.

Maybe he didn't change as much as we all have been told.... by the media.... who has had to pay him millions in damages.... that he has donated to great causes all around the world.... The media. Sometimes they get things all wrong, right?? Add to that "the fear of the unknown". Throw in something about terrorism and wow, has a fire been started?? Hard to put out the flames....

In between major computer crashes and reformating hard drives, I was able to youtube him and watch old and new videos. What a catalog of music he has!! What a person dedicated to PEACE in the world he is. I am still trying to decide what my favorite Cat song is .... I can't. And now discovering his new works.... maybe my favorite is a song I have yet to hear....

Check out his web site. Check out the many other sources of info out there on him. Right, left, neutral. I really don't want this subject to go political. I would like it to remain MUSIC! Music, the universal language! Because.... It's a "Wild World" out there, and we all need to get on the "Peace Train" because soon it will be "Another Saturday Night" with or without a "Moonshadow" and I would hate to be "Miles from Nowhere" and it all comes down to.... "Where do the Children Play?"....

In the midst of all the craziness that has been happening in my family this past month, rediscovering Yusuf has been a hightlight!

Thanks for talking music!! Repectfully, to all who may read this and have their own views and opinions.... this is just mine.

with love and peace,

Serendipity

Dear Serendipity,

Wow, I am in awe of all the Cat Stevens songs you remember! I will have to check out more about Yusuf. I still have mixed feelings but perhaps it's do to negative press. Although, he did become anti-American for a while and that kind of turned me off.

But, still he was and is a gifted song writer and singer.

Thanks for sharing. Please, share some more when you feel like it!

Peace and Hope,
Lisa

Cat Stevens is one of the best songwriters of the 20th century, even though he shortened his career.

But his words! Like:

All around me are familiar faces,
Worn out places, Worn out faces,
Bright and early for the daily races,
Going nowhere, going nowhere.
. . . (skip some)
And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad,
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.

Hi Again!

Lisa - my point about Cat Stevens exactly.... Negative Press. And in his case world wide negative press. When he left to find himself, the music industry black balled him and it was over.... then as world events changed, more things stacked up against him. He was never convicted of anything. Just rampant viral rumors gone unchecked.... I hope his time has finally come to return to the music world with open arms....

Alan - I don't think Cat/Yusaf wrote that song.... seems more like Tears for Fears "Mad World" to me.... Love that song!!

OK, I've been known to be wrong here and there. But, in my mind I hear Cat singing it. He should have written it, if he didn't!

Cat wrote some great songs, that would still be hits if released today.

Top 5 talents I like, Carol King would have to be there. I could listen to some of her songs, e.g. "So Far Away," and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" all day, never get tired of them.

And of course James Taylor, on the soft side. But I like almost anything, I could go from "You've Got a Friend," to Metallica's "Enter Sandman," to that cute remake of "Don't Stop Believing" on that tv show, "Glee." For those of us who thrived in high school and college musically, watching that group of high schoolers do it, made me wish I was that age again and could sing it with them. You can find it on YouTube. Journey did it probably 20 years ago. It's worth looking up, if you ever performed in a school group.

Since these posts about Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam is continuing I'll add something. I saw him on tv late one night about a month or two ago. It was on one of the late night shows. I hope I really saw him and didn't just imagine seeing him. I liked his earlier music. I'm not familiar with any later music. My memory is that he stopped doing popular music and chose to perform only religious music. Now he is back to performing his older music.

I'm still amazed that many of you can remember songs and artists from years back. Does anyone know how I could listen to some older music over the internet? I don't want to download anything, I just want to listen. I would like to listen to music from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Dear S and Alan,

Yes, I loved Cat Stevens too. And Carol King, well, her Tapestry Album was one of the greatest!! I used to sing every song on that album. It's sad but I can only remember a few lines from some favorite songs now!I liked Carly Simon too. But, I think of all the singer/song writers/bands I loved the Beatles the best! Perhaps because I was younger, perhaps because they were British?? I'm still a Beatles Fan @ 55!!

110? The Denver, CO area may not get above 70 today. Some freak cold wave.

I also love Linda Ronstadt, who's done a lot of old songs, including "Heatwave." I saw her maybe two years ago, still a beautiful voice, just understandably not as powerful as 30 years ago. I first saw her live in the 1970s, wow.

Has anyone mentioned Jimmy Buffet yet? His songs are half-trashy, half-serious, and I love them all. I've even eaten in his Key West restaurant, had a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" there.

Not quite a parrot head, but I've listened to his greatest hits album a whole lot. "Come Monday" is probably my favorite.

Yusuf Islam still has that voice, eh? That's fantastic -- it's a unique instrument, very expressive.

Santana? Oh wow!! His music is so timeless, and I'll bet that the crowd will be well behaved, that's the kind of vibe he sends out. From "Black Magic Woman" to "Smooth," I've loved trying to imitate him on guitar. He's tied, in my mind, for best guitarist in the world.

Congrats on the Santana tickets. Can I go with?

One of the best all time guitarist ever.

Yeah so OK, this sent me having the need to hear some good Santana, Rob Thomas music.

And this is the best, well one of the best.

Alan,

I'll bet the other guitarist on your list could not stay alive.

Carlos Santana has passed the test of time. Not many greats can. He has some great solo works.

I had a brush with Carlos Santana once back in the late 1980's. He sold his Santa Cruz, California place. The man who bought it hired my company to paint over the purple colored tile work in a very extremely decorated bathroom. I owned a bath tub and tile refinishing business at the time. The whole place was like a time warp back to the Haight Ashbury days.

I do not need his music loud to appreciate it.

Alan, let's see, great guitarists still alive.

Eric Clapton, B.B.King, Buddy Guy, Stevie Vai (his softer stuff now) I still on ocassion, love to turn on some heavy or hard rock guitar music, Van Halen, just to get the blood pumping and relieve some stress, but mostly I like the quieter stuff now.

There really are so many.

I also like these guys:

I'll bet the other guitarist on your list could not stay alive.

Jimi was with us but a while, so true. His early work is tremendous, the recordings before he got too heavily into drugs. "Hey Joe," "The Wind Cries Mary," just incredible works of art.

Let's see, Becky, you have a great list, each a hall of fame musician. Can't go wrong with Van Halen, e.g. "Panama." Of the others, more people need to know about Stevie Vai, who's skill level is darn near perfection.

I forgot about Les Paul in my list. A pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which made the sound of rock and roll possible. Inventor of recording techniques and great guitarist.

Passed away today, 94 years old. Rock on, R.I.P.

Some folks would say I'm nuts.... I often question my own sanity.... but we did it, survived and had a GREAT time!!

Saw Santana over the weekend. Three generations of us. Made another great memory while walking this devastating path with AD. The crowd was electric. Young and old. We saw many families, generations together. Carlos is truly one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

Lisa.... I've been eating peaches for the past month.... And singing "Melissa".... Now the peaches are ending.... Are there any songs out there about prunes?? Wink Bumper crop this year and looks like we will be eating them for the next month!!

Crosby, Stills & Nash next week, and then I think Mom and my days of concert going are over. Life is changing so very fast - in slow motion....

We will still use music as therapy. Still use it to escape into a world that both Mom and I can understand. Still find time to get up and take a spin around the living room, or the patio, or wherever we happen to be when the urge hit us....

And when we can no longer take that spin on the dance floor, we can lay there and say "remember when...." even if one of us can't remember.... The music will still take us away....

love and peace,
Serendipity

Dear S,

How wonderful you all enjoyed your Santana night! I've seen Carlos on several occasions (it's been a while) but he is truly amazing. I'm so glad you had a great time.

Saw Crosby, Stills & Nash in 2005 I think. They haven't been back since then but they were great too! LOVE that harmony and guitar playing!

You're so right. Music can always take us to a much better place.

I'm excited about the new Beatles rock game that is coming out today. Have you heard about it? I saw it briefly on the news and read a little on line. I gotta check it out. I'm a Beatles Nut!

Glad you have fun!!

Peace and Hope,
Lisa

Hi to All,

Has anyone bought the new remastered Beatles CD's yet? I'm sooooooo excited! I can't wait to hear them.

I think my sister and I will pool our resources and get the entire set. We're both Beatles freaks! My daughter and SIL too!

Please, let me know.

Peace and Hope,
Lisa

Has anyone mentioned the new tv show, "Glee," yet? It's about a talented but unguided group of high schoolers who love to sing and dance, who get a new staff sponsor. The show is incredibly well written and directed, lots of little stories acted out every hour. Well, there's only been two shows out so far.

Some of their songs are in YouTube. For a great example, when in YouTube search for Glee Don't Stop Believing.

This show is going to win a lot of awards, I guarantee it!

Lisa, I figured everybody's heard of the Beatles, so I thought I'd introduce something new.

The "Glee" official website is http://www.fox.com/glee/

You can watch the first two shows there, I think. Catch the music. You have to search a little to find the music from the first show, but it's so worth it, to old High School Chorus guys like me.

UPDATE!! The site makes you go to iTunes and pay for the songs!!! Don't do that!! Go to YouTube, there will always be a decent copy up till the network forces them to take it down. Then, somebody else will put it up for free at a slightly different address. Easy with YouTube search.

Glee - Yes !!!! Our family is in love with this show! I see it on and go to watch it and find it's already one we have seen. Enough of the promo, lets get on with the show!

The kids are talking about getting the Beatles game, but then we would have to get the Rock Band setup.... I think?? I don't understand all that game stuff. We have a Wii and a guitar, but I don't know if that is enough to play the game.

It looks like so much fun. Can you just put it on and watch?? LOL....

If that's a problem, you can watch it anytime from the day after, on Hulu.com, or a similar re-broadcasting website. Since the website makes you pay for a song you can hear for free elsewhere, I'm not favorable toward the official site.

For just catching a song, I try YouTube.com, where I might type in the Search box:

glee tv don't stop believing

And from there, hopefully YouTube will have a box recommending related songs to you.

I'm glad you found this thread DJ. 22,000 tunes, eh? How can you remember them all? I hear that music memory is one of the last to go, so we can enjoy music for a long time!
