My Mom is 80 yrs. old ....if Alz. is somewhere between Stage 5 & 6. She had very bad spell a few months back -- very disoriented, wandering, agitated, fearful. We finally got her to a geriatric doc and he put her on some "miracle" drugs -- anti-anxiety and anti-depressent. She then had a great spell (few months) doing very well -- even started to read paper again, did great on memory tests with doc. (throughout all this I should mention her short term memory remained terrible). Anyway, miracle has worn off and she is back to where she was and despite some med adjustments nothing is helping. My contention is that it may be time to move her to an environemnt that specializes in caring for alz-realted issues as the Asst. Living place does not have that capability. Advice? Thoughts? (I should note that the one Alz. facility my sis checked out....everyone seemed really zoned out, in wheelchairs or bed-bound -- my Mom has no MAJOR physical health issues). Also, any suggestions on meds that can appease the fear, anxiety, waondering, (no luck with Namenda or Aricept; have not tried anti-psyhcotics yet as far as I know. My sister is primary caregiver (outside of facility people). I just try to do what I can (which isn't much) from 800+ miles away.
