Is there a place for caregivers to gofor online/chat support

I am a 47 yr old caregiver for a 84yr old dementia patient. I live-in the home & it is just him & I here. He is uncapable of carrying on a conversation.

I only have 2 days a month off from work. I travel with my positions so I am hardly ever working in my own home area. It becomes hard alot of times for me being so far from my family. (Kids are grown though)

With this job I am very isolated due to only 2 days off a month. Kinda hard to make new friends when u don't even leave the house. This is gettting very hard on me being so much alone & no one to talk too.

I love my work & would never change my profession. Its just with this job I am always here not even a break. So, I am looking for some advice to help me in my situation. Anyone have any? Smiler

Kath,
At the top of the page are several threads in bold type. One relates to the Chat room here that I believe is every night.

Kathi,
There is usually a big group on this chat line. Click on the top (chat room index) at about 8:30 EST and see who is there. If there is no one there right at that time, come back and check it out after 5 or 10 minutes.

I find the chat room always has some on there much later at night,,like after 10 or 11,,so if you stay up late,,someone is almost always on,in fact a few of us are,,cause thats the best time for us.

Were you hired by this clients family to care for the person? If so,,seems to me that you could contact them and let them know that you require at least on or two days off a week,,,they could have a respite person come in and stay so that you would get a break,,,,

Who stays with your client on the 2 days off a month when you do have a day off??

I so agree, as a caregiver you also have to care for yourself. As long as you go along with the program who ever hired you will take advantage.
Make some changes that will better suit you and then you will be better able to take care of your charge. Sandra22
