We will be taking my mother home, tomorrow, by ambulance. I have to meet the Home Med at the house at 9 in the morning with a hospital bed.

The Social Worker from the hospital came into talk with me, today & said that her insurance will not pay for her to go to skilled nursing, because she is not trying to do her therapy. So she said that we will have to take her home.

I talked with my sister & she thought about it on her way home, this morning & called me & told me to tell the Social Worker that we want to try it at home for awhile & see how it goes.

My mother told me, today that she wants to go home, so I told her that she is going to have to try her best to stand & walk when the therapist tells her. She did take 4 steps to the chair & 4 steps to the bed from the chair, today.

I hope to be back in the chat room soon.

Elizabeth

I wish you and your Mom the very best of things. Its true,,,when a LO refuses to do their physical therapy,,,then they aren't allowed to stay at SNF.....but if things don't work out at home for your Mom,,,then the same facility may also have a wing for people with Dementia/AD,,,that require no physical therapy,,and this you should ask the facility about. Best of everything to you,,please keep us updated. Peace

Try to have them show you how to transfer her from a bed to a chair. If you are going to be transferring her, make sure you use your legs and not your back. You can't care for her if you injure yourself, so take care of your back. Ask about a wheelchair or transport chair. Ask about a bedside commode, gait belt and a shower chair too. They should send you PT and OT to the house and a nurse for smaller health issues and blood draws as well as an aide to help with showers.
I took my Grandma home from rehab and she wasn't walking when she came home. It was totally doable for us, but I learned a lot from watching the aides in the rehab move her and also from a CNA course I took. Before she goes home, make sure you have them show you everything and have them let you practice with her while they watch.

Jellybean's advice is so so important...we only get one back in this life!

I recently had to jump on the learning curve with this issue--(and I was nervous about it..)

Everyone has a different learning style. For me,this worked best:
The nurse had me play the patient--and actually moved me to demonstrate each move is properly done... I found this approach stayed in my memory better than just watching her...
