Hi,

Things are pretty much the same for my mom (and me). Her NH is helping to apply for medicaid for her I gave them all the papers they asked for in June. How will I know if she is accepted. will I get a letter or will the NH tell me.(I had a consult with our union lawyer and he said my mom was more than eligible)

I have noticed with other things that the NH does not move quickly so even though I gave them the papers she may not have started work on it right away.

I know its sounds strange but I don't want to call their and ask (I'm afraid they will say she was rejected come and get her).

Hugs,

KK

We put our application in directly with Medicaid. Then we received a letter with case number, etc. The NH isn't cooperating with us at all.

I would ask if there was a case number yet.

I would not have wanted to give the NH all of those papers -- none of their business.

Any answers you get here may or may not be right, unfortunately. Medicaid is controlled by the states, so what is true in one place may not be in another.

In our case, both the NH and the family were notified -- they just got theirs about a week faster. The first time we applied, we got the rejection in less than a month, probably because my dad was calling the case worker every other day. We knew we would be rejected -- we were trying to get clarification on what we needed to do to qualify and that was the only way to get a straight answer. We reapplied two months later (we were close the first time!) and got approval in about two months.

Definitely ask the NH where the application stands. If they have not submitted yet, they are going to need updated bank records, etc. from you.

Hi,

Before I placed my mom in this NH I told them we had enough money to cover 1 to 1/2 years and then would need medicaid they said no problem. I guess I will give it another month and then call the NH social worker.

Thank you

I would not wait. I would make sure they really filed the form, etc.If they can't give you case number, ask them when they mailed the forms, etc. Listen to their answers and make sure they really did it.

The NHs keep saying they have to help you..but the state says, no, lots of families file directly. It's there way of having a little more control...ie, know how much more money you have, etc.

In our case, my mother was already Medicaid-eligible when she went in, so the nursing home was really motivated to get that application in because they aren't getting any money otherwise.

Some are motivated because they have set up their home to take a lot of Medicaid residents.

Others prefer to have mostly private pay.

If you made the NH her payee, they should get the information saying whether or not she has been accepted. June? You have a certain number of days for filing. If she needed more paperwork then the NH should tell you what she needs. You might want to call and ask them how the appplication process is going. I know it tool every bit of 100 days for my parents and I did the application process myself. They (Medicaid caseworker) called me quite a bit after I sent in the initial application. It was over forty pages long (for both parents). I had the NH fax it, but I retained the originals of everything just in case.

It is easier just to make the NH the payee if you are not paying her applied income directly to the facility. I've been thinking of doing that with Dad, now that his house is sold, but I'm still paying his applied income out of his checking account and using his account to pay for his phone bill. I guess I'll keep doing that for the time being.

Guilt. It's not just for parents anymore! Smiler
