My mom has been in assisted living for 3 weeks in a dementia unit. I've been very happy with how everything is going so far! They mentioned to me when I went to visit today about the benefit of adding Hospice to her care. They have several residents that have this. They said there are so many things they can provide for my mom and give her the extra care and attention that she needs. Has anyone had any experience with this that can share some thoughts? I will be involved with her care first and foremost, but I wanted to make sure this would be a good idea. From what I understand they can help in all areas of care. My mom is still walking, eating, but is very confused and has behavior issues at times. They feel the extra help would benefit my mom since she needs constant attention.

Dear Moniquez,

Yes, hospice may assist your Mom in many ways but she does have to meet the Hospice Criteria for admission to the program.

Historically, if a person can still walk unassisted and can still speak fairly intelligently then they are not considered "end stage" nor are they hospice appropriate.

However, not all Hospice's are created equal. They may admit your Mom under another medical diagnosis if possible. Hospice is a great benefit and if she's eligible, please sign her up!

Hospice will provide wholistic "Comfort Care" for your Mom and support your entire family.

Good Luck. Please, let us know what happens.

Peace and Hope,
Lisa

Hi,

The NH had my mom on hospice for 6 months. They wanted to see if with extra care someone feeding her her meals etc) my mom would get stronger. They were right she did and is now doing very well and is off hospice care,

Hugs,

Hospice accepted my mom and it sounds like it will provide extra help for her and me. They come in to the assisted living several times a week and help with personal care, socialization and medication management. Thank You for your feedback and responses it helps with the process when you don't have any idea!
