My 91 year old father-in-law for the past two years seems to have this ongoing issue with a runny nose and occasional cough.

It’s like a cold that never goes away.

The Doctors haven't been helpful.

He does have some arthritis but rarely complains about it.

We think it might be allergies so we tried doing some antihistamine to clear it up, but at a child's dose it caused more problems than helped... he just slept all day... we couldn't get fluids in him. It was really bad until it cleared his system.

We have tried some Dayquil stuff, but it’s not good to do this every day for days on end.

He keeps thinking it’s a cold and wants cold medicine, but we don't want to over medicate the situation.

With his Az it hard to get reliable information on exactly what he is feeling or experiencing. We have only the externals to go by.

Just wondering if others out there have had similar problems.....

My dad had the same problem, it was worst when he ate. None of the allergy meds helped. You might want to try a Scopalomine path. However, it can make them more confused.

My father's nose runs as well. Is your father taking Aricept or any other memory medications? Many have mentioned that they think it is Aricept that causes this. You may first want to ask the doctor about any over the counter medications before giving those to him, they may not react well with any of his prescribed meds.

My dad's doctor gave him a prescribed nasal spray but that didn't seem to help very much. It seemed to be the runny nose started when the Aricept did.

If you go to the find tab and type in runny nose in this forum, you'll see that the subject has come up many times and you can see the observations of others here on that subject.

Theraputic fib coming...while you research the real cause...maybe giving your dad some Gatorade disguised as 'cold medicine' might help him believe it's getting better.

Just a thought,
Take go*d care, Shaye

KML-

The problem is he has been on Aricept for only a little while, and the runny nose predates this time.

Before that point he wasn't on any drugs at all for any condition and still had a runny nose.

I did note that some people on this board think the runny nose issue is some how releated to Az.

Thanks for the input.

I am so glad to hear my hubby is not the only one with this problem. I have the hardest time keeping spots showing up on my laminate flooring -- he drips ALL THE TIME and even worse when he's eating. Our dr. too tried a nose spray but more trouble than it's worth since it did not help. Just this morning, after he dripped on my back while I was helping him with dressing that I smart-mouthedly suggested he stuff a kleenex up there and leave it -- I am not very nice before my first cup of coffee. I will have to do the search for other suggestions (when I have time) but sure would like a solution. I read somewhere that it is something about the age factor and the lining of the nose, etc. But heck, if everyone has it - even those without AD -- then why haven't they come up with a solution by now??? Makes you wonder -- maybe it's the Kleenex company found a way to make tons of money!!!

Trying to not lose it!

My moms nose drips all the time too. I took her to an ENT. Guess what? It has a name. Most old people get it. It is really noticable when they eat. I wish I could remember the name. He told me next time I go out to dinner to look around at the older people eating and to watch them, they all had a runny nose. Sorry I can't remember the name. Maybe we should buy stock in a tissue company.

My sister has the same problem and is on donepizil since airecept is to expensive in the US and her insurance won't cover it. She blows her nose a lot when she is stressed out and anxious. We have tried all the allergy meds and nasal sprays. Her Dr is not to useful either so I guess we just need to handle it the best way we can. And I am truky blessed to care for my sister with alzheimer's just when you think it can't get any worse it does and then you thank your higher for the strength and knowledge to care for someone else.

There have been other threads on this, post nasal drip, etc. My mom is now off Aricept and Namenda but she still has the nose thing. Over the past few years we've consulted an ENT specialist and tried various nasal sprays and medications -- nothing worked. The dr. said it seems to be common in many elderly people especially, no known cause. Maybe we should all start our own tissue company!
