Greetings and Blessing All.

My Mom with dementia is now in a facilty, but I'm trying to help pals learn more about their folks winter area now that they need some home-care help to give the Dad sleep respite.

The 3 daughters are scattered across the country and the youngest is helping get the folks transported and settled in their Florida residence from their last summer in Michigan.
These people do not have memory issues, but will need help as the Mom has chronic COPD and osteoporosis (collapsing vertebrae). They'll need help and are just beginning to learn the costs to meet their needs (yikes!).

Anyone familiar with the caregiving resources in the area? We're now aware of www.aaaswfl.org and will start there. I'm hopeful this wonderful Message Board Community can help me connect my pals to some reliable and cost-effective resources to remain awake at night for the Mom's needs so Dad can sleep.

Thank you for everything you ALL do to keep our loved ones safe and comfortable!

Best,
Diana G.

Respite is sure hard to find esp.for night time services. We use caregivers from a private agency that is not inexpensive but has excellent staff.

They are chain called Home Instead.. We have had caregivers from them part time for a few years and are happy with them.

I wish you luck in finding someone.

I used comfortcare in Michigan a few times(not sure if they are in Michigan still or will be again). Some of the aides were great, one not so much. It's really hit or miss. It's an agency and I think the daytime rates were around $17 an hour and it's a dollar or two higher at night and on weekends.

Diane, I live near by. There is a place in Englewood that has some respite care very affordable. I will get you the name and number tomorrow. Also, call Evercare and see if you can get on the waiting list for help. They get grants from the state and if you qualify, all your respite care is free. I waited a year and a half after the application process but they are wonderful. I will also get you that number tomorrow as well. Sorry I just don't have the information with me right now. I will be in touch.

Thank you so much for your input and response. I'll check back ASAP and hope this contact can get them started. They will likely arrive in Englewood later today.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL YOU DO! Hang in there.

Best,
Diana G.

I am so sorry I have taken so long to respond. MY computer hard drive crashed and I was without a computer for a few days. I really apologize. Here is what I found out. Every Friday in Englewood at a methodist church they have respite care from 10-2. This will give you four hours to yourself. I do not have the name of the church yet but will get it as soon as I can.

The other place is Evercare Home and Health. The phone # is 800-791-9233. They work off of grants so they may not have an opening at this time. But get on the waiting list. There are a lot of requirements to get in the program and they can explain all that to you. As I said I was on a waiting list for a year and a half before I got accepted but it was well worth the wait. I hope this helps. AGain, I apolgize for the delay. I will get you the name of the church as soon as I know it.

Christine
