So today we start our vacation. Mom's going to an ALF for a week while we go to the beach.

Midnight before I went to bed I checked on mom. She was in the bathroom and there was lots of poop. Clean, clean, clean, and go to bed. I turned the monitor up so I would be sure to hear if she got up.

This morning I knew there was trouble as soon as I opened her door. The smell hit me! She was still in bed and the poop was oozing out of her diaper. It plopped on the floor as we headed to the bathroom.

Clean, clean, clean. Shower, shower, shower. Mop, mop, mop.

We haven't had poop like this in over a year. Now it happens just as she's going to the ALF. I hope she's done.

I can only blame myself. She was constipated and I gave her a few extra prunes with breakfast yesterday and some plum jelly with dinner. BOOM - it worked!

Do you think sometimes they sense a change is about to take place? Regardless of the prunes she may have picked up on your anxiety and anticipation about leaving.

I'm finding out there is no rhyme or reason to an AD/dementia patient's routine or lack thereof.

Two weeks ago I went thru that whole poopy thing with my mother. After a couple of days of this, she was worn out and I was worn out. Luckily the doctors got her back to being regular again. I am really happy for you that you are going to the beach. On the really bad days with my Mom, I dream of my past beach vacations and think about how wonderful it would be right now. Enjoy your trip, you deserve it.

I bet that it was a Caregiver that came up with the term shit happens!

Lupe is 95, and I'm 55. She doesn't know that I'm her daughter, but I know that she is my mother.

Maybe that was your mom's way of reminding you exactly why you need a vacation?

Have a wonderful time, and don't think about us at all while you're gone!

(Raven and Anita, y'all are too funny!)
