Many articles on the Internet saying senior/child proofing calls for locking kitchen cabinets. Majority of articles focus on toddlers and young children. Very few offer specifics on best choices beyond saying use magnetic locks.
One home repair site says cheap locks are a waste. Our cabinets are 50 year old and are-not flush mounted and also they don't extend fully into the door frame. Looking for your suggestions regarding types of locks for kitchen-cabinets and brands (web sites) for future installation. |

My Mother in Laws kitchen has one main entrance. We sealed it off with a metal security screen that you would normally apply outside the front door of your house.
I worried that it would look bizarre to visitors, friends, and family, but once they've seen MIL in action, they think its a great idea. One just called to say that THEY installed one too! For us, it has been heaven. This enables us to run the dishwasher--and have it run complete cycles. It allows us to have a fully stocked refrigerator, freezer, and pantry that are now protected from being emptied, dumped, or ate from prematurely. Items are no longer removed from the freezer and placed in the trash can or up in the dish cupboards. Items such as salt, Bisquick, or baking powder are no longer placed in the refrigerator "to keep fresh". Spoons that have been covered with spit and peanut butter are no longer placed in the silverware drawer. Dirty plates used for meals are no longer set back up in the cabinent. The washer and dryer run complete cycles, and have laundry detergent to clean the clothes, instead of Cascade dishwasher powder, or Liquid dish soap. The dryer is no longer a place for greasy dishcloths. Our security door is fabulous. It was EASY to install. And comes in a cream color that looks pretty in the doorway. You may have noticed I said the kitchen has one Main entrance. There is another one as well. We have placed a deadbolt lock on that. It is keyed to match the locks on the security screen door. If we had needed too, we would have installed another screen. Not a problem for us. :-) Just thought you might want to think about this. SuperWoman |
