This is the first time I've logged into this support system. My maternal grandmother passed away from Alzheimers a number of years ago and I was one of her main care givers. NOW, my paternal grandmother is battling Alzheimers and I am, again, one of the care givers. This time, however, my husband & I have a 9-year-old son who is having a hard time dealing with the effects of this disease on his beloved Grandma. He is an extremely intelligent little boy that sometimes undertands more than he should. Does anyone have any experience, ideas, support for helping him deal with the emotional aspects of this awful disease? He understands the biological/scientific issues...but that doesn't stop the tears.
Also, call the 24/7 help line at the top of the page, and discuss the situation with them. Maybe there's a support group in your area, or something like that. And they might have a bibliography of good books for children -- I know there are a bunch out there.
Maria Shriver also wrote a children's book titled "What's happening to Grandpa" that I have heard is very good. Wishing you the best in having to deal with this disease for a second time - and God bless you for your care. Marie
