Here's a poem I found several years ago about memory loss....something we've all experienced to one degree or another whether it's from stress, weariness or illness. I hope everyone enjoys it and can manage a giggle.

I CAN'T REMEMBER

Just a line to say I'm living
That I'm not among the dead,
Though I'm getting more forgetful
And mixed up in the head.
I got used to my arthritis.
To my dentures I'm resigned.
I can manage my bifocals,
But God, I miss my mind.
For sometimes I can't remember
When I stand at the foot of the stairs,
If I must go up for something,
Or have I just come down from there?
And before the 'fridge so often,
My poor mind is filled with doubt;
Have I just put some food away, or
Have I come to take some out?
And there is time when it is dark
With nightcap on my head . . .
I don't know if I'm retiring, or
Just getting out of bed.
So, if it's my turn to write you,
There's no need for getting sore.
I may think that I have written
And don't want to be a bore.
So, remember that I love you
And wish that you were near,
But now it's nearly mail time so,
I must say goodbye, Dear.
There I stand beside the mailbox,
With a face so very red . . .
Instead of mailing you my letter,
I'VE OPENED IT INSTEAD!

Author, Anita Spoon. My husband and I picked up this poem when we visited Brothers New York Style Deli in Pompano Beach, Florida some years ago.

Jennifer,

Thanks for the poem and the smile. I definitely can relate! I've been thinking of the old quote, "Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!" a lot lately. I know that my mom is the one with AD -- but sometimes I think, gosh, if I'm her caretaker, she's in trouble Smiler Where are my car keys again?

What a wonderful poem! My husband is slipping away fast and it is so hard to understand- I received the following poem in a Christmas card..THERE'S A REASON For every pain that we must bear; For every burden every care; There's a reason. For every grief, that bows the head, For every teardrop that is shed; There's a reason. For every hurt, For every lonely, pain racked night, There's a reason. But if we trust God as we should, It all will work out for our good...HE KNOWS THE REASON.

I hope this helps relieves just a little of the pain we are all feeling. This is undoubtly the most dreaded disease. Families and Caregivers need all the help they can get.
