I REMEMBER WHEN


I remember when you were bright as a light
When your mind was keen, your body strong with might.
I remember when nothing could stand in your way
Then you started to fade with each passing day.

At first, I guess, I just closed my eyes.
I kept telling myself, it wasn’t real; it was some form of disguise.
The little things – you forgot – they just “slipped” your mind.
Of course – I knew better, but I preferred to be “blind”.

I didn’t want to see what was happening to you.
I didn’t want to accept it, because – I LOVED YOU.
But slowly you started to slip away from me,
And slowly, I had to accept our reality.

I remember the day you said, “Let’s get in the car,
Come let’s go, we won’t drive far.”
You opened my door and said, “After you please.”
Then you sat down beside me and asked, “What do I do with the keys?”

I couldn’t believe the words I just heard from you.
I kept telling myself, “THIS CAN’T BE TRUE!”
But I looked in your eyes and the pain was there too,
Then you sadly whispered, “I don’t know what to do.”

I took the keys and held your hand – as a tear fell from my face.
I knew from that moment forward, I had to be the strong one – somehow I would have to take your place.
What a strange twist of fate, your dependency
Now – MY SHOULDER MUST BE STRONG – for you to lean on me.

And I will be with you dear, this you must know.
I WILL BE THERE FOR YOU, as far as you go.
I will be there when you no longer know - who I am.
I will be there because…..I REMEMBER WHEN……
